Celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the P&O Railroad track with the Conway Scenic Railroad

From June 28th through August 4th the Conway Scenic Railroad will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the completion of the P&O Railroad track from Portland. Maine through the Crawford Notch to Fabyen in the Town of Carroll where it connected to the Boston, Concord, and Montreal railroad which allowed the P&O to offer through passenger and freight services from Portland to northern New England and Canada.

Three major obstacles to the railroad being built along the steep mountainsides of the Crawford Notch Valley were overcome during the month of July, 1875, 150 years ago this year. The three obstacles were the 540 foot wide Frankenstein Cliffs Gorge, the 140 foot wide Willy Brook Gorge, and the blasting of a great cut through the 40 foot high ledge at the base of Mount Willard. Mountain Division Month will end on August 3. Then on Monday, August 4 we will celebrate Conway Scenic Railroad’s 51st birthday.

Conway Scenic Railroad is partnering with the Bartlett Historical Society for several events. In addition to a special display of railroad artifacts at the Museum, the Society will have two special presentations on the building of the P&O track and the hundred years of operation of the Maine Central’s Mountain Division. The Bartlett Historical Society Museum is located at in Bartlett and is open .
