We have settled into “winter maintence mode” here at the railroad. We have a crew of 5 people working in the shop on various projects on a daily basis. One of the big projects is the work now being done on dining car #492. A complete plan has been developed for the interior of the car which shows the location of all the new kitchen equipment as well as booth style seating. It has been determined that the exterior of the car will be painted in standard Notch Train colors. There are ten ceiling panels in the dining area of the car and we are looking into the possibility of having a mural hand painted on each one depicting various points of interest from the local area. The company is thinking about names for the car that will remind folks of the Evans family that lived in the Mount Willard section house up in Crawford Notch. HATTIE EVANS is a strong possibility, and ENOLA is also being considered for the name. Enola was the youngest daughter of Hattie and Loring Evans who were employees of the Maine Central Railroad. Loring was killed on the railroad in the vicinity of Crawford Depot early on, but Hattie continued to live in the Mount Willard section house with her family for many years. Enola was born in the section house and she was born alone, with no doctor or anyone else present. “Enola” is the word “alone” spelled backwards.

The work of installing a rest room in the “Millie,” our RDC-1 Budd Car, also is coming along. The letter boards have been sanded and are ready to receive paint and lettering. Cam Sargent has created a very nice Conway Scenic logo in the style of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad script that will be placed on the ends of the car.

Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway continues the work on #573’s trucks; they should be ready for return to us by mid-march.

The crew has removed the fireman’s side injector, the dynamo and one of the safety valves from #7470 for attention during the off season.

CSRR held its mid-winter luncheon on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the Red Jacket in North Conway. 40 employees were able to attend this year and enjoyed a nice lunch and were updated on current railroad news.

Be sure to check here on our website for the 2009 schedule and fares and lots of other information about the upcoming season.

Have a SAFE DAY and always STOP, LOOK & LISTEN!
